Telegram Application: Three Men Arrested For Conning Thousand People

Three individuals have been arrested for alleged conning of 1,000 persons of Rs. 18 Lakh via the Telegram app. The accused trio have allegedly offered the victims LED television sets, laptops and mobile phones at a much cheaper rate on the Telegram social media application. The individuals have also collected the money as advance payments from the victims through the Telegram app and then blocked their numbers so that they cannot contact the accused.

The police stated that the accused trio had been identified as Anish Joshi aged 19 years and a resident of Ranip, Ahmedabad; Vishal Sharma and Dhruv Hingol both aged 19 years and residents of Chandlodia.

The alleged trio had created three channels on the Telegram App and named them Dark Web Carding, Trusted and Safest Carding and Eyecare Hub respectively. These were the channels where they had offered the latest models of laptops, cellphones and LED TVs at a relatively low rate.

“The accused gained the trust of the victims and later demanded 50% of the amount in advance by sending a QR code to them on Telegram.

The payment was made through Google Pay or Paytm. However, once they got the advance amount, they would block the phone number of the particular ‘customer’ and never delivered the promised products,” said an officer of Sola High Court police station. Using the same modus operandi, the trio managed to dupe as many as 1,100 customers of Rs 18 lakh in Gujarat as well as other states in the past four months, he said.

“We received several complaints from customers after which an FIR was lodged at Sola High Court police station and the accused were held from a paan shop in Chandlodia on Saturday night,” the officer added.

The accused trio have been booked under the Indian Penal Code under section 406 for criminal breach of trust, section 420 for conducting fraud and 120B for conducting a criminal conspiracy adding to The Information Amendment Act.
