Eric Eoin Marques, known popularly on the dark web as the “Kingpin of child porn” has pleaded guilty to charges against him. The 33-year-old on February 6, 2020, admitted to running a dark web market server that hosted over 8.5 million video ad images of child pornography. According to the United States Department of Justice, the kingpin of child porn pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to advertise child pornography in a Maryland court.

According to federal prosecutors, Marques, who holds dual citizenship in Ireland and the United States, was the operator of a dark web hosting service that provided extra anonymous protection for free, from July 24, 2008, to July 29, 2013. The dark web service hosting by the kingpin of child porn had dozens of child pornography websites where people could view, share and download the sexual abuse of children. Some of the videos of these websites, according to federal prosecutors had videos of extremely violent sexual abuse of children and bestiality.

The defendant was described as one of the biggest facilitators of child porn on the dark web globally. Marques was born in New York but moved to Ireland when he turned 15. He reportedly hosted over 500 servers in Europe alone in addition to his dark web hosting service (Freedom Hosting). Marques also owned as ran dark web child porn sites such as PedoEmpire, Love Zone and Lolita City.

FBI agents, however, got to know of Marques’s dark web exploits and after several arrests were made regarding culprits accessing his hosting service for child porn including images and videos. Agents found his dark web moniker, the kingpin of child porn and later through undercover stings, unmasked his real identity. Marques was extradited by authorities from Ireland to the United States in March 2019. The kingpin of child porn was later charged with a four-count indictment accusing him of conspiring to distribute and advertise child pornography on the dark web between July 24, 2008, and July 29, 2013.

FBI agents stated that, out of the over 8.5 million images and videos of child exploitation found on the dark web hosting site, more than 2 million of the victims in the images and videos were not previously known by law enforcement. The dark web child porn site also reportedly saw over 1.4 million uploads of child abuse files as of July 2013. Robert K. Hur, U.S Attorney for Maryland stated that this is a horrific case where one cruel individual enabled the sexual abuse of more than a million innocent child victims and tried to keep the vile images and videos of the abuse of the dark web.

Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, Brian A Benczkowski in a released statement said that Marques’s anonymous dark web hosting service saw numerous of insidious crimes committed by the criminal communities dedicated to the sexual exploitation of child victims and spread millions of videos and images of the abuse. Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski added that Marque’s guilty pleas are as a result of the department’s fierce commitment to root out criminals and pedophiles who hide behind the dark web to commit the most serious child exploitation offenses.

The kingpin of child porn now faces a federal prison sentence between 15 and 30 years as sought by federal prosecutors. The defendant according to court documents, hopes that U.S District Judge Theodore Chuang will sentence him to 15 to 2 years in prison because of his plea agreement, something that Judge Chuang is reportedly not convinced about. Marques is scheduled to be sentenced on May 11, 2020, in Greenbelt, Maryland.

This arrest was made possible by the project safe childhood (PSC) initiative which was created to combat the growing ever-growing numbers of child abuse and sexual exploitation. Project safe childhood brings together federal and state marshals and local resources to hunt down and prosecute criminals and pedophiles who hid behind the dark web and sexually exploit children and also to identify and rescue the victims involved.

Marques’s arrest adds to the list of pedophiles who have been arrested and sentenced to prison as a result of the effort by project safe childhood. A 41-year-old was also sentenced to 35 years in federal prison on February 6, 2020, for child pornography. The culprit, Richard Denver Belden of Allen, Texas admitted to child pornography violations in the Eastern District of Texas, as he pleaded guilty to receipt and possession of child pornography on June 20, last year.

Belden’s arrest came as a result of an undercover sting by a police detective with the Plano Police Department, on the dark web to gather information on sites trading child pornography. The undercover police detective after some days chanced upon Belden’s IP address and flagged it for unusual activities. The IP address was later found to be uploading large quantities of child porn for download daily.  The undercover police detective over just two days, download more than 4,000 videos and images of child pornography from the Texas native.

On May 15, 2018, Officers of the Collins County Sherriff’s office obtained and executed a search warrant on Belden’s apartment in Allen. Police officers caught the culprit in the act of actively downloading and uploading numerous images and videos of child pornography to his dark web site, using his laptop. Police officers also uncovered 15 hard drives, which had total storage of 57 terabytes of which some contained child pornography. He was sentenced to prison by U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant.
