The Club and the Law

In the opening chapter of The Call of the Wild, Buck—once the proud ruler of Judge Miller’s estate—is kidnapped and shipped north during the Klondike Gold Rush. After being brutally beaten by the “man in the red sweater,” Buck learns the harsh rule of survival: the law of the club. This moment marks the start of his transformation from a pampered pet into a hardened sled dog of the wild.
