Lionel Wallace confesses to a friend that as a child he discovered a green door in a white wall leading to a magical paradise filled with beauty, peace, and belonging. Throughout his successful political career, the door reappears at crucial moments, but ambition and duty keep him from entering. After his mysterious death near an open construction gate, the narrator wonders if Wallace found madness—or another world.
