The Simple River Measurement That Predicts Ecosystem Collapse

This study illustrates the impact of advection speeds on the survival or demise of freshwater species in river ecosystems using numerical simulations. Species densities stabilize to steady states when advection is low, which is similar to situations when there is no directional flow. On the other hand, populations decrease toward extinction as advection rates rise, supporting the theoretical findings from stability and spectrum analysis.
