The Five Things I Did When I Landed a Role as a DevRel
Got my first DevRel role unexpectedly after a writing contest. Instead of just celebrating, I did five things to set myself up for success: 1. Studied Developer Marketing — Read "Developer Marketing Does Not Exist" by Adam DuVander, watched videos, and asked DevRel friends what they actually do.2. Researched Competitors — Analysed how competitors write tutorials and create content to stay sharp and represent my brand well.3. Improved My Coding Skills — Took a Solidity course and built a project (FairPay) to understand how developers build applications.4. Clarified My Responsibilities — Asked questions upfront to avoid underperforming or overstepping, a lesson from past work experience.5. Invested in Tools — Paid for AI and video tools to work faster and smarter, not harder. Result: Went from probation to full-time, and my bosses love my work.
