Most Teams Know Bad On-Call. Few Can Define Good On-Call.
Healthy on-call isn’t just about reducing incidents. It’s about making sure load is fair, ownership is clear, runbooks are useful, heroics are rare, and engineers can recover after a rough shift. If a rotation depends on the same people absorbing the hardest pages and the human cost stays invisible, it isn’t healthy, even if the system stays up.
