Facebook Echo Chambers Are Real But They May Not Be Driving Polarization
A massive field experiment led by researchers including Brendan Nyhan and Matthew Gentzkow analyzed how echo chambers affect political views on Facebook. In a study of 23,377 users during the 2020 United States presidential election, the platform reduced exposure to politically like-minded posts by one-third. While users saw slightly more opposing content and less misinformation, their political attitudes and polarization levels didn’t change.
