DeepMind’s Generative AI Can Now Forecast Dangerous Rainfall in Real Time

DeepMind developed DGMR, a generative AI model that predicts rainfall up to 90 minutes ahead using radar data. Unlike traditional forecasting systems that blur storms or miss sudden convection, DGMR generates realistic, high-resolution probabilistic forecasts. In tests, meteorologists preferred it 89% of the time over leading weather models for accuracy, storm structure, and operational usefulness.
