Gaming Industry: 12 Billion Attacks in Past 17 Months


The gaming industry has seen a lot of cyber attacks in the past 17 months as it has become one of the major targets bearing 12 billion credential stuffing attacks as stated by the Cloud delivery network provider Akamai Technologies. Akamai Technologies have recently published a report under the name 2019 State of the Internet / Security Web Attacks and Gaming Abuse that states that the gaming community is one of the most lucrative targets for the cyber criminals who are looking to make a quick profit. Over a period of 17 months that is November 2017 to March 2019, there were 55 billion cases of the credential cyber attacks all across the industries.

The report has also revealed that the SQLi or the SQL Injection attacks at present represents only two thirds (65.1%) of all the web application cyber attacks having the Local File Inclusion (LFI) Attacks that account for 24.7%. The data of the report shows that the SQLi cyber attacks have continued to grow at an alarming rate as a cyber attack vector with a surge in the activity during the holiday shopping season of 2018 and had continued the elevated trend since that time. In the first quarter of 2017, the SQLi attacks have accounted for 44% of all application layer attacks.

In one example of these cyber attacks, the cyber criminals target the popular games in search for the valid accounts and unique skins that are used to change the appearance of an item in a video game. Once the account of a player is successfully hacked, it can then be traded and sold. The hackers also appear to place more value on the compromised accounts that are connected to a valid credit card or other financial resources. As soon as the accounts are compromised, the cyber criminals can purchase additional items like the currency used within the game and then trade or sell the hijacked account at a mark up.
