Dark Web Undergoes Sale of the US Voter Data


Along with the sale of the drugs, weapons and several other items, the dark web vendors are getting their hands on the fresh market to ready buyers the voting registration details of the millions of the United States voters ahead of the upcoming midterm elections that were supposed to be held in the month of December 2018. The Threat intelligence firms named Intel471 and the Anomali have reported that the hackers have managed to access the U.S. voter Data information and had put it up for sale on the dark web. This is as per their analysis on the recent posts and advertisements that have been made on a popular hacking forum in the dark web. The firms further revealed that so far the voter data of an estimated of 35 million voters are made available for purchase on the dark web where the rates differ as per the state and they range between $150 and $12,000. The hackers were able to get their hands on such sensitive data of the voters’ like the contact details, physical address, names and the voting history.

On the basis of the advertisements on the dark web, the crime has affected the voters from the 19 states while the majority of the voters’ data of about 23 million records are basically from three states. As per the blog post by the Anomali researchers, the following states including the remaining of the 19 states were affected:

  • Lowa
  • Oregon
  • West Virginia
  • South Dakota
  • Wisconsin
  • South Carolina
  • Texas
  • Georgia
  • Utah
  • Kentucky
  • Kansas
  • New Mexico
  • Montana
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • Tennessee
  • Minnesota
  • Idaho

It has also been seen that some of the states have spoken up against the sale and it is a very dangerous precendent indeed. The sensitive data that has been on sale has information about citizens choice of candidate that can be used by other foreign government to manipulate the result of the election.
