Cybercriminals: Topmost Sources of Distrust in Indian Internet


Considering the source of distrust in the internet in India, the cybercriminals tops the list where 79 percent of the people believe that the social media companies contribute to their distrust there the minimum percentage of distrust goes down to 74 percent in 2018. Side by side, 60 percent Indians are quite aware of the data protection and the privacy rules where 44 percentages is a healthy figure against the global average. All of these findings were released recently as a part of the 2019 CIGI-Ipsos Global Survey on the Internet Security and Trust.

The survey was conducted by Ipsos on behalf of the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) in a partnership with the Internet Society (ISOC) and the UN conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The CIGI-Ipsos Global Survey is now in its fifth year and is the worlds largest and the most renowned survey of Internet Security and trust that involves over 25,000 Internet users in over 24 countries across North America, Latin America, the Middle east, Africa, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

The survey has also revealed that the cybercriminals in India contributes to 85 percent of distrust that is followed by 79 percent of the same for the social media, 66 percent for own government and 65 percent for the foreign government. Considering the terms of fake news source in India, Facebook stands first with 75 percent followed by the other social media platforms and YouTube at 72 percent each. Websites provide the mass with fake news contributing to 63 percent and television to 53 percent.

While the figures are quite intriguing on this matter, 71 percentage of Indians agree to the fact that the government does enough to actually safeguard their online data and as well as the personal information. Four in every ten are familiar with the blockchain technologies.
