Australian Federal Police Unmasks A $1.73 Million Cyber Fraud


Jasmine Vella Arpaci the 21-year-old Australian has been charged by the Melbourne Magistrates Court for 53 fraud offences. The charges brought by the Melbourne Magistrate Court as she was found guilty of fraud. Jasmine Vella Arpaci was charged over her role in a major fraud that hacked the country’s biggest superannuation funds along with the identities of thousands of consumers. The young 21 year hails from Melbourne. Court documents show computers at major superannuation funds REST Super and HESTA were allegedly accessed by a fraud ring as it siphoned off people’s super. The country’s biggest retail sharebroker, CommSec, was also allegedly hacked by the ring and customers’ data access. Australian Federal Police acting chief Chris Goldmid told all the people to check their account balances immediately as the police were trying to nab and tried to understand the total effect of the scam.

The consequences of the breaches we have discovered are far-reaching and can be traced back to cybercrime offences that impact everyday Australians according to the Australian Federal Police acting chief. According to the police chief, there were thousands of stolen IDs belonging to unsuspecting victims were recovered during the investigation.

According to the Australian Federal Police investigation, Mrs Vella Arpaci and her partner and associates stole around 1.73 million dollars from their victim’s accounts without prior knowledge or intimation. The federal police are also suspecting more arrest to be made in the coming days as the case uncovered and the more criminals come to light. Those affected include Club Plus Superannuation, HESTA, Hotplus, LUCRF Superannuation.  According to the Australian Federal Police statement, people all over Australia have been affected by the scam. People from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia have been affected.
