Google to Prompt European Android Users to Select Preferred Default Browser

Google has announced some of the major changes for its mobile OS working on Android in October 2018 soon after the European Commission hit the company with a record of $5 billion of antitrust fine for pre-installing its own apps and services on third-party Android phones. The European Commission has allegedly accused Google of forcing the Android phone manufacturers to illegally tie its proprietary apps and services especially, Chrome and Google Search as the default browsers to Android users, unfairly blocking the competitors from reaching the consumers. This rule has led Google to change its way of licensing the Google mobile application suite to the Android Smartphone manufacturers. Furthermore, Google is making some changes related to the choice for the browser and the search engine.

In a blog post that has been published on one Tuesday, Google has announced that the company would prompt the Android users in Europe of both the new and the existing groups in the upcoming months to choose from a variety of the web browsers and search engines as their default apps for their devices. Although, Google did not specify that the prompt is likely to appear during the phone setup phase. The new modification is likely to come a few months post revelation of Google about its paid licensing agreements for the Google Apps on the third-party Android smartphones. The all new licensing scheme is applied to only the Android devices present in the European Economic Area that comprises of the 28 EU countries including Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway and the phone manufacturers are required to obtain separate paid licenses in case they want to include the following

  • Play Store, Gmail, Maps and YouTube without the Chrome and Search Engine.
  • Everything that includes Chrome and Search Engine

This is another example where Tech gaint is flexing its muscle to get an undue advantage over its competitors.
